With the National District tournament just around the corner, Mount Vernon Coach Jessica Hebel said she feels comfortable with how her team is playing. The Majors showed just why on Tuesday, spoiling the festivities at Stuart by defeating the host Raiders, 3-0, on their Senior Night.

“I thought we played well,” Hebel said. “We are really trying to get more shots-on-goal and apply a little more pressure inside the circle. We need to communicate to get those shots. Like most teams, when we get shots-on-goal we win.”

Mount Vernon dominated that aspect of the game, out-shooting the Raiders, 16-4. Senior Shelly Hoath scored just over seven minutes into the contest, stuffing in a rebound after a save from Stuart goalkeeper Hillary Douglas. Douglas finished with four saves on the night.

Junior Marcy Hoath notched the Majors’ second goal on a penalty stroke. The penalty was called after a Raider defender blocked a shot-on-goal with her body.

Mount Vernon junior Megan Schray scored the games’ final goal after an assist from freshman Maddie Zeigler.

With the win, Mount Vernon finishes the regular season with a 10-4 record, including victories in its last four games. Accordingly, the Majors will enter the district tournament as the No. 3 seed and host a first-round game.

“I am feeling good about moving into the tournament, but there are still a lot of things we can work on,” Hebel added. “I am happy about where we are seeded, but I know our district has some really good teams. We play on Thursday and so it only gives us one practice to get ready. Hopefully we will keep getting better and keep playing well.”
