Edison senior Ryan Perkins, whose team was coming off of a big, 5-3 National District victory over Yorktown, pitched a gem Wednesday night against visiting Stuart, striking out seven batters. But it was the leadoff home run that Perkins hit that really sparked the Eagles to a 10-1 victory over the Raiders.

“We did what we were supposed to do,” senior shortstop Isaac Barnett said. “It is what it is. It’s a win.”

Perkins sent the second pitch of the game from Raider sophomore pitcher Kellie Duncan over the net in right field and the Eagles never looked back.

“I try my best,” Perkins said. “I feel like I’ve been doing well this year.”

Junior catcher Josh Knupp hit an RBI single to score junior outfielder Julian Robinson in the third inning and double Edison’s lead. Later in the inning, Edison appeared ready to blow the game open, but Duncan got herself out of a bases-loaded jam with only one out.

In the bottom of the third, Stuart senior infielder Sam Nelson countered with a home run of his own to give the Raiders some life, but it was short-lived.

Edison broke the game open in the fourth inning with doubles by Knupp and junior outfielder Reid Moran that each scored two runs. Barnett also made a spectacular play, stealing home to push Edison’s lead to 7-1.

“We needed the run,” Barnett said. “[I] decided to get it right there.”

The fifth inning was the same story for the Eagles. Senior outfielder Corey Washington led off with a bang as the all-region football player hit a bomb over the left field fence.

“I could not see the ball,” Washington said. “I have the contacts in, [so] I was squinting up there at the plate.”

Perkins and Moran added another RBI a piece before the game was called due to inclement weather.

“We did everything well,” Perkins said. “Even in the rough weather.”
