Concorde District

Headed into the season Oakton looks to be the favorite with returning squad members Becca Kassabian, Jenna Cahill, Lanie Smith and Jessie Daley leading the team. All are in the Top 10 returning athletes to the Concorde District this year. Add in Kelly Jones, Lannie Smith and Allison Gregor and the Cougars could be hard to beat this season.

Herndon, with Hiruni Wijayaratne, is not far behind Oakton in the Concorde District and the championship meet could see eight of the first ten positions being filled with Herndon and Oakton athletes. Herndon also has Carly Kulik, Carolyn Hennessey and Laura Ortel who can run with Oakton’s main pack and Jessica Wilds and Mehnaz Haq will displace other teams fourth and fifth runners.

Chantilly, with Virginia AAA runner-up Lia DiValentin, is the favorite for the third spot in the Concorde Division. DiValentin is also the defending Northern Region and Concorde District champion. Backing her up will be Hilary Baird, Rachel Grochowski, Jessica Stillwell and Kacey Norwood.

Other runners in the district that could be Top 10 finishers are Fairfax’s Frances Dowd, Robinson’s Stephanie Bray, Amanda Nevlud and Ashley Swim and Centreville’s Jenna Richmond.

Patriot District

Lake Braddock will be the favorites going into the season and also for finishing in the top three at the state championships. The Bruins will have sub 5:00 1,600-runner Liana Epstein leading the squad. Lake Braddock defeated West Springfield last year by 11 points and have the horses to back up Epstein. Casey Larnder, Nadeen Khoury, Amanda Parker and Kelly Hagan all have gone under 12:00 in the 3,200 and that pack will be hard to beat.

West Springfield also returns a solid top three in Alex Watt, Anna Barber and Pagie Kvartunas, but graduation meant they will have to look down into their junior varsity to find runners to help fill out the squad. Lisa Williams, Kellee Farris and Hannah Gumpf will be the ladies the Spartans will be counting on to challenge Lake Braddock.

West Potomac finished third last year, but lost most of its team to graduation. Kelsey Rosenberg, Amelia Cooksey and Catilin Corcoran will be looking to keep the Wolverines in the hunt.

Madeline Willner of South County is the top returning runner in the Patriot District this year, but will have to find support to keep her team in the fourth spot this year. Nicole Lewis, Emma Ork and Sania Ahmad are the other returning runners this year.

Sarah Bryan of T.C. Williams and Kelsey Fish of Hayfield are two other runners who could break into the Top 10.

National District

Yorktown was the district champion last year and looks to be the favorite again with four out of the top 14 returning runners. Lindsey Hunt is the top returning runner, but the Patriots also have Madeline Meyer, Lydia Carpenter, Kara McInroy and Lesey Coia returning.

Edison looks to be the next best with Myah Hicks, Emily Swain, Ashlen Burtz, Betel Yosef and Anna McMullen leading the team.

Falls Church has Audrey May, Arianna Tyner, Riley Lousen and Niki Rutledge to lead them as the favorites for the third team in the district.

Other runners to look for are Washington-Lee’s Annmarie Hansen and Cynthia Carson and Stuart’s Victoria Fowler.

Liberty District

Thomas Jefferson won the district title last year with 40 points over W.T. Woodson and Langley, but the race should be much closer this year. The Colonials return Lisa Junta, Sarah Watson and Stephanie Marzen as their top runners. There is a slight dropoff after that to Olivia Jeffers and Katherine Bailey, but with a large group of ladies to draw from, the competition should be enough to keep Thomas Jefferson on top.

Langley looks like the team with the best chance to overtake Thomas Jefferson this season. The Saxons return Lauren Shaw, Carolyn Shaw, Amanda Steffey and Ishanna Laszlo as their top four runners. Hannah Liberson gives them a good fifth runner, but they will need to develop some depth.

W.T. Woodson has depth, but about a four-minute spread between their first and seventh runner. The Cavaliers return Aaren Pastor, Carrie Payne, Sarah Haight, Isabel Greenberg and Hannah Martins.

The other runners expected to be in the Top 10 are Stephanie Paradis of Stone Bridge, the top returning runner in the Liberty District, and Devin Ericksen of South Lakes.

Concorde District

Oakton last year won the Concorde District and this year should be a repeat. The Cougars have Brian and Heal Hendricks coming back along with Chris Weil and Patrick Fulghum. On top of that they get Fairfax transfer Dante Morales, and will be hard to beat this season.

The Robinson boys were second last year to Oakton in the Concorde District, finishing 35 points behind, and this year they are expected to repeat that second-place finish. They have two strong runners in Stuart Steen and Jared Berman, but will need to find three others to fill out their squad if they expect to close the gap to Oakton.

Other runners from the Concorde Division that could challenge for a Top 10 position is Chantilly’s Chris Foley (fourth last year in the district meet), Westfield’s Jack Canatsey, Kevin Halsey and Matthew Anderson, Centreville’s Yazid Zouaimia and Mattson Heiner and Fairfax’s Kevin Dowd and Luke Tonia.

Westfield, Fairfax and Chantilly will battle it out for third with Herndon, which brings back much of its varsity team from last year, working its way into the hunt.

Patriot District

West Potomac captured last year’s Patriot District by four points over Lake Braddock, but will have to work hard this year to repeat that finish. The Wolverines have the depth, but will have to overcome the Bruins’ top three in order to pull out the win. West Potomac returns Khoki Bernier, Derwin Kinston, Peter Coffey, Thomas Hammond, Alex Triplett and another eight runners than ran under 18:10 last year.

Lake Braddock, with its top three runners of John Cruz, Alex Clark and Daniel Tobin, will be hard to beat. Their next runner is way back behind West Potomac’s top seven and will have to break up their pack. Luke Shol, Matt Klein, Madison Singer-Riske and Darren Sokvary will all be working to keep the title at Lake Braddock.

South County can not be counted out of the mix with Brett Mandeville, Matt Karwel, Thomas Keefe, Marcus Jones and David Schmidt all in the Top 15 returners from the Patriot District.

Other runners who will be in the mix in the district race this season will be West Springfield’s Daniel Tobin and John Locke, Annandale’s Scott Plunkett and Charles Simpson and T.C. Williams’ Spencer Beasley and Daniel Ackerman.

National District

Edison wiped up on the district last year, taking 1-2-4-5-7 to win with 19 points. Four of those five runners are back with Leoule and Tihut Degfae leading the team. The twins have been seen frequently in summer road races, so their fitness level should make them ready for a state title run. Joining them are Spencer Rodriguez and Jonathan Iredell from last year’s top five. David Bulir, Paul Riehl and Robert Grooms will lend credible enough support to keep the Eagles at the top of the pack.

Washington-Lee finished third last year, but looks to move up a notch this year. The Generals return Luke Malley, Brian McGrail, Steve San Miguel, John Shehan and Marc Patton from last year’s team and should have enough to move into second.

Yorktown was second last year, but lost much to graduation. The Patriots’ top returner is John Papvizas but they also have Dylan McGowan and Carl Hurtado to lead the team.

Other runners who could break into the Top 10 are Stuart’s Sam Carolus-Hager, Falls Church’s Alex Howe and Wakefield’s Tim Cossey.

Liberty District

Thomas Jefferson is the defending Virginia AAA state champion, and last year scored a perfect 15 at the Liberty District meet. They lost four of their top runners to graduation or transfer, but still have the troops to get them back to the state meet. Joey Jachowski, Tim Galvin, Max Dreo, Alex Witko and Colin Maloney are the runners whose chore it is to bring the Colonials back to the awards stand in November.

W.T. Woodson placed second last year in the district and also advanced to the state championships, but lost a number of runners to graduation. The Cavaliers return Ethan Katz, Alex Miller, Joshua Chartier, Cameron Key and Mike Davis, all of whom ran sub 18:00 last year. But Woodson will have to find some much-needed depth in order to keep the team in the hunt for the distirct title this year.

After those two teams, the chore is to find teams that can put a fourth and fifth runner near the middle of the pack to score enough points to put them on the awards stand. McLean and South Lakes look to be the teams with the best chance.

Runners to watch in the Liberty District this year to challenge for a Top 10 spot include Lucas Rooney of Marshall, Sam Radele and Joe Thompson of McLean and Will Sickenberger of South Lakes.

Football: J.E.B. Stuart 30, McLean 14

**Check below the story for a video player with complete highlights of Fridays game**

When Roy Ferri took over Stuart’s program this past summer — his second stint as the Raiders’ head man — he vowed to change things.

And he has delivered.

Ferri, who held a mock funeral upon accepting the head coaching position in April to “bury the past,” led Stuart to its first win in almost three years, 30-14, over McLean in its home-opener on Friday night. The victory snapped a 25-game losing streak that spanned three seasons.

“Our boys and our coaching staff have worked so hard,” said Stuart’s Director of Student Activities, E.W. Nowland III, as he stood on the sidelines in the rain as the last few seconds ticked off and the crowd chanted “Ferri! Ferri! Ferri!” behind him. “I am so proud of them. I am proud to be part of J.E.B. Stuart and the Raider community.

“We owe it all to the players who played tonight. It’s fantastic.”

Senior Chris Goslin was forced into playing quarterback tonight after injuries left the Raiders short-handed at the position. Goslin however, not only provided a spark but was spectacular all night. He went 10-for-15 passing for 214 yards with three scores and had a 9-yard rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Junior Chris Ventura was on the receiving end of half of those completions, catching five passes for 99 yards, including touchdowns from 45 and 22 yards, respectively. Ventura also gave Stuart an early 6-0 lead on a 12-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter.

“It feels good,” said Ventura, who celebrated with his teammates in the locker room following the game. “It’s the first win in three or four years. It’s hard work. Hard work every day in practice and it paid off.”

Goslin found senior Terrill Hawkins from 39-yards out with just :50 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Raiders an 18-0 lead.

McLean, after a nice kickoff return, got on the board when junior quarterback William Hecht connected with junior Joseph Beiro from 10-yards out. Beiro rushed for 106 yards on just 10 carries. Hecht later hit senior Milton Smith for a 44-yard touchdown, but the Highlanders would only get one more possession before time expired.

“We aren’t buying into that whole thing … because you are Stuart, you lose,” Ferri said. “I am enthusiastic about this whole thing and so are the fans. We are going to make some mistakes. We are still learning to play football, but we can win. If you make mistakes you have to overcome them.”

Stuart will attempt a new streak — a winning streak — next week when it travels to face Lake Braddock on Friday night. Mclean, meanwhile, will host W.T. Woodson.
